GOAL
Swedish Orphan International’s overall goal is to achieve strong sales growth and good profitability.
Sales growth will be achieved by providing a growing number of patients with orphan drugs through:
• Increased sales of existing products.
• Geographic expansion focusing on Europe.
• Acquisition and licensing of new products.
• Possible takeovers.
Profitability will be achieved through:
• An increased share of proprietary and licensed products, leading to better contract terms and higher gross margins.
• An increased number of products in newly started European subsidiaries to increase returns on investments in infrastructure, human resources, etc.
• A continued focus on cost efficiency.
STRATEGIES
A broad geographic presence in Europe
Our patients are dispersed throughout the world. Local knowledge through a local presence in close proximity to the patient is therefore crucial to the success of our business. Through a broad geographic spread and local presence in many markets, we will acquire the organisation, local experience and resources we need to ensure that the orphan drugs we distribute, both our own products and drugs distributed on behalf of partners, really reach the patients.
Licensing our proprietary products to external partners in markets where we have no in-house organisation
To improve growth and reach out to patients, one component of our strategy is to license our proprietary products to external partners in markets where we have no in-house presence.
Increase the share of proprietary products in the portfolio
By acquiring licenses for products at late stages of development and funding the development and registration process for the drug ourselves, we will continuously expand our product portfolio. Proprietary products ensure greater control and better contract terms as well as higher economic margins.
Be active in clinical development
By taking a more active role in late clinical development, we will be able to exert more influence in this phase. This, combined with our continued strength in regulatory issues, will improve our ability to ensure that the orphan drugs reach the patients.
Be an attractive employer and partner
Our strength in the market comes from our extensive knowledge in our specialist area, including development, distribution and contacts. To maintain this position, we seek to ensure that we remain an attractive employer and partner. This enables us to recruit and retain individuals and partners who are valuable for our business.
Acquire products and businesses
To further expand our product portfolio, we will seek to acquire rights to products as well as small niche companies that fit into Swedish Orphan International’s business, organisation and culture.
