Swedish Orphan International’s business concept is to develop and supply orphan drugs – drugs designated for the treatment of rare, life-threatening or chronically debilitating diseases. Swedish Orphan International was founded in 1988 and is a pioneer within the area of orphan drugs. Swedish Orphan International has for several years been one of Sweden’s fastest growing companies, and now has affiliates throughout Europe.
 
Our name, Swedish Orphan International, comes from the expression “orphan drugs”, a term used to describe the specialist drugs that we bring to market. “Orphan” refers to the extra care and attention that these drugs require in order to achieve the same degree of development as conventional medicines. This is the only way of ensuring that patients with rare diseases get access to the same quality of treatment as patients with more common diseases.
 
Our patients can be found in countries all over the world and have medical needs which either can not be treated with the methods that exist today or for which the existing treatment is inadequate. Today, we are aware of 6,000 rare diseases, but only around 300 of these are treatable with existing medicines, thus there are many patients who are still waiting for a treatment.
