ABOUT US

This is Swedish Orphan International

Swedish Orphan International’s business concept is to develop and make available orphan drugs – drugs designated for the treatment of rare, life-threatening or chronically debilitating diseases - and products for which there exists an unmet medical need. Swedish Orphan International was founded in 1988 and is a pioneer within the area of orphan drugs. Swedish Orphan International has for several years been one of Sweden’s fastest growing companies, and now has subsidiaries covering all of Europe.

Our name, Swedish Orphan International, comes from the expression “orphan drugs”, a term used to describe the specialist drugs that we bring to market. “Orphan” refers to the special care and attention that these drugs require in order to be developed successfully. This is the only way of ensuring that patients with rare diseases get access to the same quality of treatment as patients with more common diseases.

"They are like children who have no parents
and they require special efforts to develop"
                                                         Henry Waxman, US Congressman

The rare disease patients can be found in countries all over the world. These patients have medical needs which either can not be treated with the methods that exist today or for which the existing treatment is inadequate. Today, we are aware of 7,000 rare diseases, but only around 400 of these are treatable with existing medicines, thus there are many patients who are still in desperate need for a treatment option.

Swedish Orphan International offers patients and partners an international network specialising in the development, marketing and distribution of orphan drugs. Swedish Orphan International is continuously monitoring advances in research, which may create better opportunities for the rare disease patients in need. Swedish Orphan International’s vision is to be the leading provider of orphan drugs.
